Video Poker Hand Strengths

The hand strengths in video poker are the same as they would be in a five card draw card game with the exception that most video poker machines are jacks or better. This means that you have to have a pair of jacks or higher in order to win anything at all.

Hand Strengths:

• Jacks or Better- this is a hand that contains a pair of jacks, queens, kings or aces. 
• Two Pair – this is any two pair, these two pairs do not need to have jacks or better, they can be any two pairs at all such as two threes and two nines.
• Three of a Kind – this is three of any same card.  For instance three tens would be a winning three of a kind and again these do not have to be jacks or better.
• Straight – this is any five consecutive cards.  Nine, ten, jack, queen and king would be a winning straight hand.
• Flush – a flush is any five cards of the same suit.  Ace, four, ten, king and deuce of clubs would make a winning flush hand.
• Full House- a full house is any three of a kind with a pair.  If you have three kings and two fours, you have a winning full house hand.
• Four of a Kind – this is four of the same cards.  Four kings would be a winning four of a kind hand.
• Straight Flush – any five consecutive cards of the same suit is a straight flush.  A six, seven, eight, nine and ten of hearts would be a winning straight flush hand.
• Royal Flush – this is the best hand in poker is and is the ten, jack, queen, king and ace of the same suit.
